Homer, Alaska History | Activities | Churches | More... Description Homer, located approximately 215 miles from Anchorage on & near the north shore of Kachemak Bay is one of my favorite places to visit. It has such a wide variety of activities available, that you are sure to find an adventure here suited to your tastes. Besides the world class fishing for halibut and sea run salmon there is a large community of artists and craftsmen. All of this surrounded by such amazing scenery it will be perfectly clear to you where the local artists get their inspiration. Modern Homer has all the amenities for a pleasant stay, whether you choose to camp on the beach or visit one the local hotels or bed & breakfasts. There are many shops displaying the artwork of the local artisans. The dock & small boat harbor is located along the Homer Spit. The Alaska Ferry System makes stops in Homer. Hundreds of fishing charter & commercial fishing operations also operate out of the Homer harbor. There are also several tour operators that can take you on a breathtaking trip around Kachemak Bay and the nearby islands such as Gull Island for viewing puffins, whales, seals & other sea life. The US Coast Guard has a presence here with the Seagoing Buoy Tender Hickory on patrol. A must-see is the Pratt Museum. They have exhibits covering a wide range of interests from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill to an exhibit of artifacts of the early Natives. The exterior grounds are just as lovely and self guided tours to view the large selection of native flora is encouraged. There is also an active entertainment community. The Pier One Theater, located on the Homer Spit has been in operation for 23 years. The local talented performers have put some wonderful productions on there. The recording artist, Jewell grew up in Homer. Author and radio personality, Tom Bodett of the "we'll leave the light on for you" fame also has called Homer home. Hobo Jim, a local legend, has been entertaining folks throughout Alaska for years. History | Activities | Churches | More... |
